Betting in Canada is now legal in a way it was not five years ago. Single-event wagering became lawful in August 2021, and Ontario opened a private, competitive market under the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario in April 2022. The rest of the country has stayed with provincial lottery sportsbooks and, for many bettors, offshore books that have operated here for decades.
That mix is genuinely confusing. Search results for "best betting sites Canada" are full of pages that ignore where you actually live, list operators that cannot legally take your bet, or paper over the difference between an AGCO-licensed book and one licensed in Curaçao. Is online sports betting legal in Canada?
Yes, with an important asterisk. Single-event sports betting became legal across Canada in August 2021 when Bill C-218 came into force. What varies is who is allowed to offer it to you.
In Ontario, licensed private operators run by companies like bet365, FanDuel, and DraftKings compete under the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. Every other province and territory has a single provincial lottery sportsbook, such as PROLINE+ in Ontario, PlayNow in BC and Manitoba, PlayAlberta, Loto-Québec's Mise-o-jeu+, and ALC Proline in Atlantic Canada. Offshore books licensed in places like Kahnawake, Malta, or Curaçao operate in a legal grey area outside Ontario. There is no law against a Canadian using them, but they are not licensed here.
Do I have to pay tax on my winnings?
For recreational bettors, no. The Canada Revenue Agency treats occasional gambling winnings as windfalls, not income, so they are not taxable. This applies whether you win $50 or $50,000 on a single ticket.
If gambling is your primary source of income and you bet with a professional level of systematic behaviour, the CRA may treat you as a business and tax your net winnings. This is rare and hard to prove. Interest earned on your winnings is always taxable.
Why do Ontario sites advertise smaller bonuses than offshore sites?
The AGCO's advertising standards, updated in 2024, banned Ontario-licensed operators from advertising inducements such as bonuses, credits, or free bets to the general public. You can still find them once you are signed up and logged in, but they cannot be splashed on billboards or the operator's own homepage.
Offshore books are not bound by AGCO rules, which is why their front pages still feature large welcome offers. Compare the actual terms rather than the headline number.
How fast are Interac withdrawals in practice?
On the best Ontario-licensed books like bet365, FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM, an Interac withdrawal usually clears in under 24 hours and often within an hour or two once the operator has approved it. First-time withdrawals take longer because identity verification runs on the first cashout.
Provincial lottery books like PROLINE+ and PlayNow are slower, typically 3 to 5 business days, because they process withdrawals in batches rather than continuously.
What is the minimum age to bet in Canada?
Nineteen in most of the country. Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec are eighteen. The operator will verify your age against a government ID before you can withdraw for the first time, and Ontario books check age at signup.
Can I use a VPN to access a book that is not available in my province?
You can, technically. What you cannot do is withdraw your winnings if the operator later notices. Books check IP, device ID, and payment address at withdrawal, and any winnings from a jurisdiction you are not eligible for can be voided under their terms. We do not recommend it.
